Recently researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have developed the Magic Number that will identify your Heart’s health. Led by Professor Ulrik Wisløff,  the largest database in the world on fitness in healthy women and men has been developed. Using the database, the researchers were able to develop a MODEL that enables the calculation of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), which is the single best way to measure physical conditioning and cardiac health.

5000 healthy Norwegians between the ages of 13-90 provided data to help accumulate a large enough adult population to study.  After looking at this data a few things were apparent.  Every decade 5% of both men and women’s oxygen intake is lost.  But the most shocking was that regardless of age, someone that has low levels of fitness are up to 8 TIMES more likely to have cardiovascular diseases and/or risk factors.

Based on a single blood sample, researchers say it could be possible to design effective exercise program that suits an individuals genetic make-up and that makes it possible to prevent or delay the development of cardiovascular disease.

The Professor says that even just One day a week could be enough to help someone fight against Heart Disease. Stating that if the heart could reach 90% of it’s capacity during that workout and maintain it for at least 4 minutes, you could be on your way to saving your life.
